So there's now a local noise adjustment control. Hogarty makes a local white balance adjustment to match daylight. In mixed lighting situations global white balance options never quite gets the job done, Horgarty said.

But a local white balance adjustment control now lets you adjust the color cast of just part of an image. Lens Corrections. Hogarty said Adobe has partnered with lens companies to provide lens profiles in the current version of Lightroom.

Chromatic aberration is applied on a per-image basis after image analysis now with a Remove Chromatic Abberation checkbox. Previously the profile was used but could make things worse if there was a discrepancy between focus distance and the profile's understanding of it, for example. Lightroom 4 provides previews based on printer profiles that highlight which colors are out of gamut won't print accurately. That's more useful than the sort of preview you get in the Photoshop print dialog because it shows you exactly where the issues are.

Soft Proofing. The red mask shows what colors the printer can't handle. Adjustments you make to minimize the red warning are saved as a virtual copy. You can consequently make an intelligent adjustment for that profile but Lightroom knows you are making a compromise for this particular printer so it makes a virtual copy of the image with the correction rather than modify the original edit.

Gamut isn't the only issue when printing, Hogarty noted. Overall brightness and contrast is an issue, too. Prints are darker than screen images. So Lightroom will let you apply an adjustment to the print module. One important factor not included in the new soft proofing function is paper color, which varies quite a bit from one product to another.

But any monitor display of a print equivalent is only going to be an approximation anyway. The real value of Lightroom's new soft proofing is in its gamut warnings. Print output isn't the only thing you can soft proof, though. You can also soft proof to the sRGB color space for the Web. Per module tips are now available throughout the modules to help those just getting started, explaining important aspects to a module.

Select your photos, pick a preset for size and select the email service you've set up to "save a lot of clicks.

As a public beta, Lightroom 4 remains a work in progress. We look forward to giving it a test drive as soon as we can download it. There are a lot of features, in fact, we're anxious to put to work right away. Of course, there are two sides to the public beta coin.

The other is contributing to the product's development by participating in the Lightroom forum, contributing your feedback. That's really how Lightroom got built in the first place and why it's developed in the direction it has.

And, frankly, why it's as valuable a tool for photographers as it is. GPS Tracking. Map a set of images at once or read a tracking log. Location Names. However, doing so reveals that not all develop module settings are even supported. Adobe have also tackled one of the biggest problems that people face when printing, namely prints turning out darker than on the screen.

When selected, one can adjust the brightness and contrast of the print itself, without making any changes to the photo. The ability to create Blurb books is, like soft proofing, a feature that has been highly requested, so the inclusion of this new module will delight many.

It makes it incredibly quick, easy and painless to create Blurb books and, as a producer, I love the fact that as changes are made, one is kept informed of the cost implications.

However, its not just blurb books that can be built. One can also export their project as a PDFs, which is great for creating ebooks. However, there is no spell checker, which given the disproportionately high number of dyslexic photographers out there, seems like something Adobe should add ASAP. Nor is there an option to include a watermark, which many will regard as essential. Nevertheless, direct email is a feature that photographers have been crying out for and what there is works well.

The ability to display, search and pin photos to Google Maps is, depending upon your perspective, either incredibly useful, or visual masturbation. For those who take the latter view, it is possible to hide this new module and indeed any others for which one has no regular use.

Geotagged photos are automatically pinned to the map, as are photos to which location metadata has been manually added. Images without location metadata, unsurprisingly, must be manually pinned. This involves moving back and forth between the Library and Map modules, which for anyone with a large collection of non geotagged photos shot in multiple locations, is a bit of a chore.

Clicking a locator pin opens a mini window in which one can browse all photos pinned by it. However, this window is rather small and does not appear to be resizable. Double clicking a photo in this window opens it in the library. The option to open it in a different modules instead, might be useful.

Very little actually. Adobe have done an excellent job of responding to customer requests and Lightroom 4 certainly seems to fulfil most of my needs.

Lightroom 2, whilst not perfect, was streamlined. Lightroom 3 added some useful functionality, but as a result, started to feel ever so slightly bloated. Although Lightroom 4 adds new modules, it also simplifies and improves existing ones, in the process eliminating this bloat. Once again it is streamlined. More than ever before it just works.
